Day 6: The Lake District of England

Weather: Showers

We were off to an early start this morning. We planned to drive around the "wall road" that circles Chester but the road was closed for a marathon; so we left and headed to the Lake District of England. The drive was fine but not as impressive as Wales.

We exited the highway and drove through Windemere, Ambleside and Ryder, finally arriving in Grasmere, a very cute village.

We went looking for a Tourist Center and pulled into a driveway that Ethel (GPS) suggested. We walked into what was a hotel and were told they were the closest thing to the Tourist Center----just brochures! We asked about a room and she gave us a "Sunday night deal". The room was 85 Pounds---not bad!

Our room was not ready so we decided to go on a bus to Bowness where we took a short boat ride around the lake. It was a little rainy but not bad. We even saw the sun a few times!

Back in town we walked around and went into  the "Peter Rabbit" store. Sally bought Quinn a little Peter Rabbit. We took the bus back to Grosmere and walked around and found a nice art store. I bought 2 prints of scenes of sheep and farms. They are going to be shipped home.

I forgot to mention that before we went on the bus ride we went to "carving" at the hotel. Basically, it is a nice beef or chicken dinner with roasted potatoes, mashed carrots, green cabbage and spoon pudding. Quite good!

We went back to the pub (Tweedy"s) where we had a cheese board and wine. Had a local beer called "Mafia".

Tonight we will plan our entrance into Scotland, much of which will depend on the weather and visibility. The rain has not slowed us down, however!

Cheers!
